Mathematics at Woodcroft Primary School

At Woodcroft Primary School, we follow the NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation approach, placing a strong emphasis on the key mathematical knowledge and skills that children will use throughout their lives. Our mathematics curriculum is underpinned by a mastery approach, which enables all pupils to develop a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts.

Children are introduced to new learning through carefully sequenced teaching and are given opportunities to practise and embed their understanding through a range of fluency activities. As their confidence and competence grow, they are challenged with reasoning and problem-solving tasks that encourage them to apply their knowledge in a variety of contexts, including real-life situations.

We also work closely with National Numeracy and are proud contributors to their Family Maths initiative. Through this partnership, children are encouraged to take mathematical challenges and investigations home, working with family members to solve problems together. This helps pupils recognise the relevance of mathematics beyond the classroom, promoting positive mathematical conversations at home and demonstrating how maths is used in everyday life.

Through these approaches, we aim to develop resilient, confident mathematicians who can think critically, make connections in their learning, and use mathematics effectively in the world around them.

Yearly Overviews

Throughout the year, teachers aim to cover a variety of domains in order to prepare children in all areas of Mathematics. As children progress through the school, their previous skills are built on and developed, with challenge provided in order to extend understanding. We follow the Hampshire Phase Model which ensures a wide coverage and a revisit of key skills across terms, to guarantee that Maths knowledge remains at the forefront children’s minds.

Calculation Policy

At Woodcroft, our calculation policies follow the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) approach. This allows children to experience Maths in a variety of ways, ensuring access for all types of learners. We use a wide range of resources, images and calculations to embed learning and engage the children.
