Welcome to the Spring Term!
We are excited to begin the Spring term with lots of engaging learning opportunities. This term, our main history topic will be The Romans, and we have many exciting activities planned.
History
For Spring 1 and 2, we will explore Roman times. To kick off the topic, we will have a Roman Day on 14th January, featuring a hands-on workshop provided by Build to Learn.
Roman Britain Workshop:
Step back in time to AD 43 when the mighty Roman Army, under Emperor Claudius, arrived in Britain. The Romans brought roads, stone buildings, and luxurious villas that transformed life for the Britons.
Before the Romans, Britons lived in roundhouses, but Roman rule introduced new towns and homes using advanced engineering.
During the workshop, students will:
- Compare Iron Age and Roman homes
- Collaborate to build a Roman villa
- Discuss how daily life, housing, and infrastructure changed
- Consider different perspectives on whether Roman rule was beneficial
Reading
Our two main texts this term will be:
- The Tin Forest
- The Magic Faraway Tree
Children will focus on improving their summarising and inference skills.
English
We will use the book The Queen’s Handbag to help us write a fact file about the UK, and Tidy to develop our instruction writing skills. Both writing outcomes will have the purpose of informing the audience.
Maths
Year 3 will concentrate on:
- Securing skills in column addition and subtraction
- Exploring 2D shapes and their angles
Art
Our art focus will be on English artist and designer Cath Kidston. Children will create their own prints inspired by famous UK landmarks.
Homework
- Reading: Please continue to read as much as possible and fill in the reading diary.
Children should have:
- A library book -a book for pleasure (which may be above their reading level, please read and discuss it with them)
- A Little Wandle or Fluency book at the correct level for independent reading
Reading is a vital life skill—the more children read, the more fluent they become.
- Spelling: Children have Year 2 and Year 3 word lists in their purple homework books, along with spelling practice ideas.
From January, an assignment will be set every Monday on EdShed.com (logins are at the back of the book). These tasks link directly to classroom learning. - Additional Resources: Homework sheets will be sent home on Thursdays (optional but helpful for consolidating learning). Other useful apps/websites include ReadTheory and TT Rockstars.
PE
PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday.
PE kit:
- White top
- Black shorts/leggings/jogging bottoms
- Trainers
This term’s focus: balance and ball control. Children will not be able to participate without correct footwear
