Summer 2

 

 

Welcome back!

We hope you had a fun and relaxing half term break!

We will be continuing with our Vikings and Anglo-Saxons topic. We will be learning about the reasons why the Vikings invaded England and how they decided where to settle. In English we will begin by developing this topic further by looking at Viking myths. We will looking at the features of a myth and then writing our own myths. In the second part of the term we will be using The Suitcase Kid by Jacqueline Wilson as our key text.

In maths we will start with a unit on fractions, looking particularly at equivalent fractions before moving onto decimals. We will then be looking at geometry and measurement again, building on our skills from the previous terms. 

 

In science we will start a unit on forces which will be consolidated with our trip to Paultons Park.

 

Please note P.E. is now on Monday and Friday. If your child is not able to take part in P.E. they must have a letter written to the teacher explaining the reasons. 

 

Homework is still due in on Fridays.

Summer 1

 

 

Welcome back!

We hope you had a fun and relaxing Easter holiday!

We are starting a new history topic on the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. We will learning about life in Anglo-Saxon Britain and about the invasion of the Vikings. We will be constructing Viking long-houses, so if you have any spare cardboard at home (particularly shoe boxes) please send it into school! Thank you! 

 

In English we will be looking at twisted fairy tales, starting with Little Red Riding Hood and the film Hoodwinked. We will begin by studying the traditional version of the story and acting this out in a play, before looking at the different character's points of view. We will then be writing our own version of the story.

In maths we will start with a unit on number and place value, looking in particular at rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. We will then be looking at multiplication and division again, building on our skills from the previous terms. 

 

In science we will start a unit on materials and in ICT we will be creating short films using movie maker. 

 

Please note P.E. is still on Mondays and Thursday. If your child is not able to take part in P.E. they must have a letter written to the teacher explaining the reasons.

Spring 2

 

 

Welcome back!

We hope you had a relaxing half term break. 

 

 

We are continuing with our rainforest topic. However, we are going to be changing our focus from deforestation to be looking at the endangered animals that live in the rainforests around the world. Throughout this half term we will be linking this topic through our English, geography and DT work. We will be working to raise awareness for endangered animals by supporting WWF. On the last day of term we will be having a 'Wear it Wild' day, where the children will have the opportunity to come to school dressed as their favourite endangered animal. We will also be making and selling cakes to raise money for WWF. You can find out more about last years 'Wear it Wild' day here:

In English our key text will be Tigers at Twilight by Mary Pope Osborne. This is the next installment in Jack and Annie's Magic Tree House adventure. From this text we will be writing to inform and persuade, as well as learning and performing poetry.  

 

In maths we will continue with our geometry unit looking at position and direction. We will then move on to an addition and subtraction unit with a focus on negative numbers and measure.

Spring 1

 

Happy New Year!

We hope you had a fun and relaxing Christmas holiday.

Our topic this term is the Rainforest and this will be our focus in English, Geography and Science. In English our main key text will be The Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. From this text we will be writing to inform and to persuade. We will also continue to develop our writing skills, using a range of sentence types and new vocabulary.

 

In maths we will continue developing our skills using place value. We will be rounding numbers to 10, 100 and 1000 and counting backwards through 0 to  include negative numbers. Over the course of the term we will also continue to learn our multiplication facts to include the 12 times table.

 

Please note P.E. is now on Mondays and Wednesdays. If your child is not able to take part in P.E. they must have a letter written to the teacher explaining the reasons.

Autumn 2

 

Welcome back, we hope you all had a great half term!

 

Our topic for the Autumn term is the Titanic. We will continue to discover more about life on board the ship and why the ship sank. In December we will be going on a trip to the Seacity Museum in Southampton to learn more about the Titanic. Please remember to bring your trip money and slip in as soon as possible, we don't want to miss out on this fantastic opportunity!

 

In English our main writing outcomes will be an advertising campaign, a newspaper report and a non-chronological report all linked to our work on the Titanic. We will continue to  develop our writing skills and apply these to a range of genres.

 

In maths we will continue working on our multiplication and division skills. We are working towards  fluency in our times tables facts. We will be making links between multiplication and division facts and applying this knowledge to solve problems. Please make sure you practice your times tables facts at home. Have a look below for some links to websites with games to help you practice.

Welcome to USA class! smiley

 

USA Class Fantastic Presentation Board

We are all looking forward to a fantastic year in year 4. Your teachers will be Mrs. Clarke, Mrs. Wilkinson and Mrs. Towner. 

 

We will begin the term by finding out facts about America, and in particular the different landmarks that make up our table groups: Yosemite National Park, the Hollywood Sign, Route 66, the Statue of Liberty and the Everglades. 

 

Our main topic this term is the Titanic. We will be learning lots of facts about life on the Titanic, as well as plotting the route that was planned from Southampton to New York. 

 

In English our main text is Tuesday by David Weisner. There will be many writing opportunities linked to this text. 

 

In Maths we will begin the year by looking at place value and improving our addition and subtraction skills.

 

PE will be on Tuesday and Thursday. Please make sure children have their PE kits in school at all times.

 

Reading diaries will go home this week, it is really important that children practice their reading at home and remember that they can earn certificates, bookmarks and books for the number of reading logs completed. 

 

Homework will be set on a Friday and is due back the following Friday. Please make sure your child completes their homework and hands it in on time. 

 

We will be on the playground on the beginning of the day and the end of the day if you have any questions.
