Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

After the Easter break our new topic will be called 'Music and Rhyme'.  We will be looking at a variety of Nursery Rhymes such as 'Humpty Dumpty', 'Macdonald's Farm', Polly put the kettle on', 'Hickory Dickory Dock' etc.  You could practise singing them at home or write them down and create a little book.

Remember to practise learning your words that are sent home and to log on to the phonics websites below! The phonics testing will take place in the Summer.

I hope you are all having a relaxing half-term break!

Our new topic for Spring 2 is Under the Sea!  We will be learning about what type of animals live Under the Sea and we will also make some sock puppets of these animals so if you have some old socks please bring them in.

In maths we will be looking at how to collect and record data in Tally Charts and Pictograms.  We will also be measuring the length and capacity of a range of items.

In Literacy we will be looking at rhyming poems linked to our Topic.  We will then create our own rhyming poems.  After this we will create a recount.

P.E. days have now changed to Mondays and Thursdays.  Children should bring P.E. kit that is suitable for indoor and outdoor lessons.  Please remember your reading diaries need to be in every day.  It will be really useful if the children can carry on with their reading at home and practise their words from their Phonics sessions and also their number bonds as this has a positive impact in their learning.

Thank you,

Mr Renton, Mrs Milkins and Mrs Blackman

Happy New Year!

I hope you have all had an exciting and relaxing Christmas!  Our new Topic for the first Spring term will be Dinosaurs.  I have added a link about Dinosaurs - which has memory games, make your own Dinosaur game and matching the Dinosaur to its shadow.  You could research some facts about Dinosaurs and bring them into school to show to the class.

I hope you are all enjoying the half-term break!  I have just added a link about our new Topic - Kings, Queens and Castles, if you wanted to research some facts and bring them into school.  These facts will help us to make our own castles!

Welcome back!  I hope you all had a fun and relaxing Summer!

This half term the children are learning about countries around the world but specifically Kenya.  We have an animal safari and travel agents in the role-play area to help us with this!  We will be looking at the similarities and differences between the UK and Kenya.

In maths we will be practising recognising numbers and counting accurately.  We will be looking at improving our mental maths of what is 1 more and 1 less of a range of numbers.  We are also going to be learning how to add and subtract numbers.

In Literacy we will be practising forming our letters correctly.  We will also be learning about stories from different cultures.  We will be particularly focussing on the stories ‘Handa’s Hen’ and ‘Handa’s Surprise’.  We will be looking specifically at how the stories have a beginning, middle and an end and this will help us story map them.

We are also going to be setting ourselves goals for the end of term or the end of the year as well as thinking about what we may like to be when we are grown up.
