England Class

Welcome to Year R!

We hope you had a great half term and enjoyed the weather!

Our topic continues to be 'Animals'.

We had been caring for our caterpillars before we broke up and Miss Mannerings has been keeping the cocoons safe at her home during the half term!  We hope to see them grow into butterflies soon.

We are looking forward to our trip to Longdown Dairy Farm on Wednesday 14th June.

Click here to look at their website: http://www.longdownfarm.co.uk/

We will also be receiving a delivery of eggs which we can watch hatch into baby chicks!

All of these experiences will enable us to learn and understand about the world, which is part of our Early Years Curriculum.

We will be continuing to apply our phonic knowledge to help us read and spell words.  Please practice reading, phonics, writing and number work at home as this really does make a difference, even if just for 5 or 10 minutes each day.

As the weather gets warmer and sunnier, please remember to apply sun cream before coming to school, or bring a named sun cream bottle to school for the children to apply themselves.  The children learn in our outdoor environment every day so children are also encouraged to wear a sun hat.  Please also wear appropriate footwear - no flip flops please!

As we approach the end of Year R, we will prepare ourselves for Year 1 by visiting the classroom, meeting our Year 1 teacher and thinking about what we would like to learn about.  The new Year R children for this September, will also have opportunities to 'stay and play' and visit our classroom over the next few weeks.

Please remember to bring your book bag (or other suitable bag) and reading wallet to school everyday.

We have also been really good at being 'Smart for School' - let's keep this up!

PE day will continue to be Thursday.  Please ensure appropriate PE kit is in school and earrings are removed.  As the weather is getting nicer, we will have PE sessions outside.  Please make sure your child has appropriate footwear such as trainers or plimsolls.

April - June 2017

We hope you had a great Easter and are ready for our final term in Year R!

For the whole of the summer term, our topic will be 'Animals'.

We will focus on a different group of animals every 1-2 weeks, starting with a theme on Pets!

Please don't forget to return your 'Pets' homework on Tuesday 25th April to share with everybody.

We will learn about different groups of animals, how to care for them, where they live (whether they are wild or tame) and some life cycles.

Also we are excited to say that we will be going on a school trip to Longdown Dairy Farm in June.  We are also hoping to have chicks and caterpillars in our class to observe the life cycles.

We will be continuing to apply our phonic knowledge to help us read and spell words and we hope to see as many parents/carers as possible at one of our phonics workshops.  Please practice reading, phonics, writing and number work at home as this really does make a difference, even if just for 5 or 10 minutes each day.

Please remember to bring your book bag (or other suitable bag) and reading wallet to school everyday.

We have also been really good at being 'Smart for School' - let's keep this up!

PE day will continue to be Thursday.  Please ensure appropriate PE kit is in school and earrings are removed.  As the weather is getting nicer, we will now start to have PE sessions outside.  Please make sure your child has appropriate footwear such as trainers or plimsolls.

We hope you have had a great Christmas and looking forward to the year ahead.

This half term our topic is Superheroes.  We will be discussing our favourite superheroes and use storybooks to link our learning.  We will talk about what super powers we would like to have!

We will count in different contexts including though songs and rhymes and use objects to help us.  You can help your child with number recognition, by becoming number detectives and finding numbers on their journey to and from school.

We will continue to develop our gross and fine motor skills in order to make us expert writers and help us to use classroom equipment effectively, such as scissors.  Dough gym is one of the activities that helps to make our muscles strong!

Please keep reading at home and supporting your child with their 'Teddy Words.'  It is also important to bring a bookbag/suitable bag to school everyday with the reading wallet inside.

During our learning through play times, we will regularly revisit the Phase 2 phonic sounds in order that they are embedded in children's learning.  We will now also move on to Phase 3 within the phonics programme and will learn the phase 3 phonic sounds listed below:
j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er

Please support our new initiative 'Smart for School' and ensure children are wearing correct uniform and appropriate shoes.  Also a reminder that PE kit needs to be in school and ready for a Thursday morning, as this is also part of our whole school uniform.  Earrings must be removed prior to PE sessions.

If you have any queries regarding your child's learning, or for advice/ideas on how to support your child at home, please come and speak to your child's key person before or after school.
